Peter Lawson Jones, a member of the Board of Cuyahoga County Commissioners since 2002, will speak about the Fatherhood Initiative, a County funded program to promote healthy father-child relationships, address social problems that result from "father absence," and ensure that every child has a father figure in his or her life.
Jones, the only African American county commissioner in the State of Ohio, serves on the County Planning Commission and is vice chairman of the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District and an ex-officio board member of the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland Chapter. He is the County Commission's designee to several organizations, including the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland Executive Committee, Cuyahoga County Corrections Planning Board and United Way Services Board of Directors.
Jones is a partner with the law firm of Roetzel & Andress and previously served two and one-half terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he was the ranking minority (Democratic) member of the House Finance and Appropriations Committee and second vice president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus. He was formerly the vice mayor and a councilman in the City of Shaker Heights and served as special counsel for the Ohio Attorney General and Associate Bar Examiner for the Supreme Court of Ohio.
Amongst his civic activities, Jones is president of the Housing Research and Advocacy Center board of trustees and treasurer of the Harvard Law School Association of Cleveland. He serves the County Commissioners Association of Ohio as both a member of its board of directors and chair of its Urban Counties Committee. For his work, he was named an Ohio Super Lawyer for 2004 and is a graduate of the Leadership Cleveland Program.
