Title: Alltel searches for the fastest hands in the world
Date: 11/12/05

Cleveland-area consumers can attempt Guinness World Record for ‘Fastest Text Message’

In an effort to break the Guinness World Record™ for “Fastest Text Message,” Alltel will kick-off the Axcess Text Messaging Challenge Nov. 15 at its retail store in Mayfield Heights. Consumers can win $5,000 and try to best the current world record of 43.24 seconds, set by 23-year old Kimberly Yeo Sue Fern of Singapore in June 2004.

The event will be hosted by Cleveland Browns’ speedy No. 1 draft pick Braylon Edwards. Contestants must text the following 160-character message on an Alltel wireless phone:

The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.

To officially break the record, the message must be texted correctly – including all spaces, capital letters and punctuation – in less than 43.24 seconds. Deviation of any kind will invalidate the attempt. The use of T9® or any other predictive text mode or spelling aid is also prohibited. A representative of Guinness World Records will be in attendance to certify the results.
“Speed and accuracy have been crucial to my success in the game of football,” Edwards said. “Those attributes are equally important in the Alltel Axcess Text Messaging Challenge. I’m excited to see how Cleveland’s finest texters stack up. Hopefully, someone breaks that world record!”

Regardless of whether or not the record is broken, Alltel will award the participant who records the fastest time of the day with $5,000, and a matching $5,000 to be donated to the Cleveland Browns Foundation. Contestants are encouraged to practice the message as much as possible prior to the contest.

“Text messaging is one of the fastest-growing methods of communication,” said Kris Kurtz, area president of wireless retail services for Alltel. “With more and more consumers using wireless phones to text every day, the Axcess Text Messaging Challenge is a great way for Alltel to demonstrate the functionality of our Axcess Text Messaging service, while recognizing and rewarding skilled texters.”

The Alltel Axcess Text Messaging Challenge will be held Nov. 15 at the Alltel retail store in Golden Gate Plaza, 6420 Mayfield Road, Mayfield Heights. There is no cost to participate and no minimum age requirement. Preliminary rounds will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Those with the fastest times each hour will compete in the final round with the opportunity to break the Guinness World Record and win the $5,000 award. In addition, Alltel will randomly select one individual to compete in the final round through a special wild card drawing held at the store that afternoon.

Title: Harvard announces new initiative aimed at economic barriers to college
Date: 10/22/05

The University has earmarked $2 million in new financial aid funds to cover this expanded aid next year, bringing its total annual scholarship budget for undergraduates to just under $80 million. The new formula, which will take effect next fall for all students — entering and returning — is expected to benefit more than 1000 families (of the 6600 undergraduates) next year, based on current enrollment patterns.

The key to the new financial aid initiative is that parents with incomes below $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of their child's education at Harvard. At present, the average contribution for parent(s) with incomes under $40,000 is $2,300 — that number will be $0 under the new plan. Families with incomes of up to $60,000 will see their expected parent contributions reduced by an average of $1,250.

The new financial aid initiative is the latest step in a progressive expansion of financial aid at Harvard in recent years. Harvard College's nearly $80 million in scholarships for undergraduates in the coming year represents a 49% increase over the past six years when inflation rose by only 13.5%. The increase in scholarship aid has reduced the average student loan debt upon graduation from $14,600 for the Class of 1998 to $8,800 for the Class of 2003. The national average debt upon graduation is close to $20,000, including students who attend public universities.

Title: Searching For Stars Kicks Off Oct. 15 At Cleveland State Auditorium
Date: 10/05/05

Talent Program To Conduct Auditions Throughout Ohio;
Aim Of SFS Is To Foster Education And Jobs In Entertainment

CLEVELAND, Ohio, Sept. 16, 2005 – A new talent program, "Searching For Stars," will be launched on Saturday, October 15 to inspire teenagers and young adults to consider the entertainment industry as a wise choice for jobs of the future. The launch will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Cleveland State University Center Auditorium, 22nd and Euclid, and is open to the public at no charge.

The event will feature entertainment acts in gospel, jazz, rock and hip hop and a discussion of the auditions that will be held in Cleveland and throughout Ohio in the coming months, leading up to a Grand Finale competition in Cleveland next June.

The program, developed by Poise Entertainment Education Company, a 501 (c)(3) organization, concentrates on the entertainment industry specifically and the many kinds of jobs it offers in front of and behind the scenes. Poise, over the last dozen years, has produced the successful "You Can Do It" program, which has trained more than 3,000 persons for opportunities in the entertainment field.

“Searching For Stars is a natural adjunct to our previous work with You Can Do It,” said Jerome Smith, CEO and Producer of Poise. “We know that there are at least a hundred different kinds of jobs in the entertainment industry and we want to continue to emphasize that and that these jobs do not only exist in Hollywood or New York. The jobs range from on-stage performer to musical director, to lighting specialist and sound person, to publicist and marketing specialist, to set designer and costumer, to stagehand, carpenter and rigger, to stage manager and director, to general manager and administrative assistant and on and on.

“We want people to know about these multi-faceted career opportunities and we are doing so through the vehicle of Searching For Stars. After the first year of auditions and the grand finale in Ohio, we will take Searching For Stars to other states. We expect to have all 50 states included in the second year, with the grand finale taking place again in Cleveland,” Smith said.

He said that funds raised through the process will be earmarked for the eventual Entertainment Education Institute, a two-tier high school and a four-year college that is slated to be based in Cleveland. Smith indicated that groundbreaking could occur within the next several years. It is estimated the Institute will cost $50 million to build and it will have state-of-the-art technology, studios, a performing center and classrooms. It will cover all aspects of education that apply to theater, music, dance, studio art, film, TV, radio, writing, visual arts, marketing and PR and the business side of entertainment.

Title: Cleveland International Film Festival Celebrates 30 Years
Date: 03/09/06

Founded in 1977, the Cleveland Film Society has presented the Cleveland International Film Festival every spring for nearly three decades. Ohio's premier film event features more than 200 new films from over 40 countries on six continents. Visiting directors, panel discussions, student screenings and a conference for area filmmakers are all CIFF highlights.

The Cleveland Film Society serves area film enthusiasts with film appreciation classes and year-round film exhibition. Over 1,500 people belong to its various membership and subscription groups. And tens of thousands of people enjoy its programs. The age range of participants is 8 to 80. Youngsters attend the Family Film Festival at the CIFF and senior citizens share their enjoyment of the art form in film appreciation classes.
This year's film festival will start on March 16, 2006 and end March 26, 2006.

This year CAAO is sponsoring "Say Amen Somebody".
Gospel music—a traditional African American celebration of faith and joy. George T. Nierenberg’s SAY AMEN, SOMEBODY combines elements of the documentary with those of the musical to capture the truly jubilant and celebratory nature of his subject. The film focuses primarily on the careers and recollections of two of the most celebrated pioneers of gospel music, Willie Mae Ford Smith (a.k.a. “Mother Smith”) and Thomas A. Dorsey (“The Father of Gospel Music”). Gospel music permeates every part of their lives—they sing around the dinner table, they sing by themselves in their backyards, they sing in front of thousands of people. Featuring younger performers, SAY AMEN, SOMEBODY also shows the new direction of gospel music as it is influenced by and influences bluegrass, blues, and pop music. SAY AMEN, SOMEBODY will surely continue to captivate audiences today. –E.J.B.
"We screened this documentary before it was cool to show docs and it played like a general entertainment film. And the real thrill for me was that Willie May Ford Smith attended the screening and had the SRO crowd cheering. The added bonus is the day the film was shown, John Sayles and his partner Maggie Renzi were in town for their film, LIANNA, and wanted to watch SAY AMEN. I sat with them and enjoyed the whole experience." –Jonathan R. Forman, CIFF Founder

For more information on "Say Amen Somebody" and the other 199 films that will be shown over the next 10 days click here

Title: ALLTEL honors Martin Luther King Jr.
Date: 01/18/05

On January 17, 2005 ALLTEL honored the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with a celebration.

Held at the newly renovated Myers University Club, ALLTEL representatives traveled from headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas to share in the celebration and announce the ALLTEL Share the Dream scholarship program. “ALLTEL will support students currently attending or planning to enroll at Historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) this fall by awarding $2,000 scholarships in seven of the company's wireless markets,” announced George Page, president of wireless business solutions. Students in the Cleveland-Akron area can participate by writing an essay with the theme "What Will I Do to Preserve My Place in History?”

The youth were the highlight of the program. The ballroom was silent as Terrence Greene, artistic director, along with his students from the Cleveland School of the Arts and Foluké Cultural Arts Center snatched the audience’s breath as they gracefully flowed to the rhythmic beats of “Journey Through” a medley of Negro spirituals. They systematically brought King’s movement to life through renditions of “His Eye’s on the Sparrow,” “Everything Must Change” and “Wade in the Water.”

Title: ACLU & NAACP examine Michigan 's ban on Affirmative Action
Date: 01/02/07

CLEVELAND - Stanley Miller, executive director of the Cleveland Branch NAACP, Kary Moss, executive director of the ACLU of Michigan, and Professor William Carter, Jr. of Case School of Law, will discuss affirmative action in a program entitled, "Forgetting Equality: The Elimination of Affirmative Action," on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Avenue , Cleveland .

"One of the most significant policies that came out of the civil rights movement is affirmative action," said Christine Link, executive director of the ACLU of Ohio. "It was and is the only way to undo centuries of racist and gender oppressive laws and practices that made 'equal protection under the law' meaningless words in our Constitution." The ACLU works to ensure that everyone in America gets to enjoy the rights, freedoms, and liberties that our Constitution guarantees.

On November 7, 2006 following a long fight through ballot initiatives, Michigan joined California and Texas in limiting affirmative action.

The nonprofit, nonpartisan ACLU of Ohio has offices in Cleveland and Cincinnati and community and campus chapters throughout the state. Due to a recent increase in membership, there are now almost 30,000 ACLU of Ohio members and supporters in Ohio and more than 500,000 nationwide.

The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available. For more information or to RSVP, visit www.acluohio.org or call (216) 472-2220.
